Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge

The U.S. Bureau of Statistics projects that STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) jobs will increase by over 20 percent in the next five years alone, but the U.S. is now finding a lack of young adults interested in science careers, further deteriorating the country’s global competitive edge.

To help the next generation of great innovators, Discovery Education and 3M are looking for America’s next “Top Young Scientist.” Ten finalists will be chosen to work directly with a 3M scientist to create an innovation that solves a problem in everyday life that they will present at the 3M Innovation Center for the chance to win $25,000!

Why does my child carry his body-weight in books to school everyday?

Every now and then it’s good to vent.

Why is it that my son’s backpack weighs more than he does?

I am sure I am not the only one to have noticed the weight of these things!

Our children are now like those ants we read about when we were children. You know, the ones that can lift 5 times their own weight. Or was it 3 times? Well, I’m sure I can find the answer in my son’s backpack because I’m pretty certain the sum total of human knowledge must be in there, somewhere. [Read more…]

An Unusual Post: Looking Behind the Curtains of ScienceWithMe!

This is not the sort of post that I usually write.

Usually, I write about science and education-related issues, and I share fun experiments and activities that you can do with your child.

But that’s not what this post is about.

Instead, I’m going to “break out of character” and tell you a bit about the behind-the-scenes workings of ScienceWithMe!

If you’re only interested in education, then this isn’t for you – go ahead and browse through our archives, or sign up for our free activities, or just come back in a few days for a new post.

But if you’re interested in business and marketing, or just want to know how our business works, then read on…

How to Spark Your Child’s Success in Science!

Elva O'Sullivan profile photo

Elva pictureAt Science With Me! we believe a parent can make a big difference in how a child views science. Seemingly small but crucial acts can spark a child’s desire to know more about the natural world. A word of encouragement, or an attitude of curiosity, may be the tipping point that leads your son or daughter to an early interest in science.

Research shows that parental involvement is just as important as the quality of a school in predicting how well children do academically. When parents are supportive, the children do better, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic background, or the parents’ level of education. [Read more…]

Looking for more fun educational resources? Introducing EducateWithMe!

Educate With Me

I’m always on the lookout for ANYTHING educational that might capture my kids’ interest.

I really do mean ANYTHING – be it a book, science kit, or even a live insect – anything that might capture their interest and keep them off the Playstation or Nintendo for a few hours.

Introducing… EducateWithMe!
